Convention Centre Announcement
August 31, 2011

St. John’s – Destination St. John’s sees the recent investment announced today by federal and provincial governments, for the expansion of the St. John’s Convention Centre, as a major stimulus to increased tourism visitation to the City of St. John’s and to the Province. The approximately $45 million investment into the expansion of the existing convention centre, which includes a $15 million contribution from the City of St. John’s, will meet the growing demand for the destination by the lucrative meetings and conventions market.

As the popularity of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to increase in the meeting, convention and incentive travel marketplace, the size and scope of the existing convention centre is inadequate. Ranked by an independent survey as sixth of twenty-one national convention destinations across Canada in its value and appeal, St. John’s will now be positioned to increase its market share of this business. Destination St. John’s has long awaited news to share with meeting planners across North America. They can now consider St. John’s as a destination for their meeting or convention

Cathy Duke, CEO, Destination St. John’s (DSJ) says “As cities across the country are building or expanding their convention centres, we need to improve our existing facilities in order to remain competitive and to meet the ever increasing demand by the association and corporate market to bring their meetings and conventions to St. John’s.” The economic impact of meetings and conventions to the City of St. John’s and surrounding areas is approximately $35 million per annum from delegate spending alone. This is a good news story for the citizens of St. John’s and tourism operators in the province as almost half of all convention delegates extend their trip and vacation in the province.
Doug Loucks, Chair of the Board, says “From an industry perspective, major hoteliers and accommodators in the City are proud to be contributors to this project through a continuation of the of the 3% accommodation tax introduced in 1999 and paid by guests of all roofed accommodations in the City. This tourism marketing levy finances the City’s portion of this investment, therefore, no additional cost for this construction is being passed on to the citizens of St. John’s.”

Destination St. John’s is a not-for-profit organization operating under the direction of a Board of Directors on behalf of its partners. It is first and foremost a sales organization; selling member’s products, services and experiences to the world. It currently targets major meetings, conventions and incentive travel (MC&IT); sport and cultural events, leisure travel and group tours.

2013 World Ball Hockey Championships are coming!!
August 6th, 2010

Destination St. John’s is pleased to announce that St. John’s will be the host city for the 2013 World Ball Hockey Championships. The bid was awarded this morning at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s as part of the Canadian Ball Hockey Championships which is taking place in the city now.

Keith Healey, CEO of Destination St. John’s says, “We were pleased to work closely with the local bid committee headed by Paul Barron to put together the winning proposal to host this major world tournament. Partnerships between local associations, venue operators and DSJ are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in attracting national and international events. Just as in the game itself, strong team work produces results in event attraction. “

The championships will be held in early June 2013 and will go on for 10 days. Venues in St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Torbay will be used for the games. It is anticipated that the event will attract almost 900 players, coaches and officials from 24 countries.

A nationally recognized Sport Tourism Economic impact Assessment Model (STEAM) developed by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance pegs the value of this tournament to the region at over $2M.

Paul Barron, local host committee chair added, “The Newfoundland & Labrador Ball Hockey Association is delighted to be the host of the 2013 ISBHF World Ball Hockey Championships. In 2008 we hosted the World Junior Ball Hockey Championships which was a tremendous success. Indeed we were told it was “the best organized Junior World Championship ever”. We have also hosted the Canadian Nationals six times. We look forward to building on these successes and making this the best world championship ever.”

The Puck Drops Here in 2012!
Destination St. John's is pleased to announce that the 2012 International Air Traffic Controllers Hockey Tournament will be held in St. John’s. The event will run over five or six days during March of 2012. The Host Committee Chair is Pat Woodford from Gander and Destination St. John’s worked closely with Pat in preparing the bid.

Pat Woodford said, “As chairperson of the organizing committee for the 2012 International Air Traffic Controllers Hockey Tournament I am eagerly looking forward to showcasing St. John's and area as a truly international destination capable of handling an event of this magnitude. This will be the second time in six years that we have had the pleasure of hosting this event and each year it gets more complex. When we hosted the event in 2006 we had 400 participants on 34 teams representing 5 countries and we anticipate the same this time. We will be doing some fundraising for the tournament starting immediately and any excess funds will be donated to local charity. In 2006 we donated $10,000.00 to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Currently we are in the planning stages and look forward to working closely with Destination St. John's, who were instrumental in assisting us with our bid package.”
Keith Healey CEO of Destination St. John’s said, “St. John’s and area continues to be seen as a first rate year round destination to host major meetings, conventions and events. Our facilities are constantly growing and improving and the world is impressed. The IATCHT returning so soon after the highly successful 2006 event is confirmation of these views.”

An economic impact assessment undertaken to measure the success of the 2006 event showed that over $400,000 was spent in the province on accommodations, facilities, restaurants and entertainment. Each person attending the tournament spent approximately $975 during their stay. All this resulted in approximately $175,000 paid in wages, $33,000 paid in various taxes and 1,800 accommodation room nights being sold.

Mark McCarthy Chair of Destination St. John’s said,” Through discussions at our Board we have identified that sporting and cultural event markets have great potential for our destination. Winning this bid shows us that working in partnership with local groups we can compete and be successful in attracting major events. We look forward to making more such announcements in the future.”

The summer months of June, July and August were extremely busy for accommodation members of Destination St. John’s. Room night sales were up 5% compared to the same period last year. 160,094 room nights were sold during the period this year; while over the same period last year 152,748 room nights were sold. The average occupancy over the period was 87.05%, up 3.9 points from last year. Average room rates also increased by $4.32; representing a 3% increase in the rate for the summer period.

These numbers are based on statistics submitted monthly to Destination St. John’s by the thirteen major hotels, which represent 84% of the total commercial rooms in the City.

Keith Healey, CEO of Destination St. John’s, said, “This kind of growth will go a long way to help our industry reach our goal of doubling our tourism revenue by 2020. To sustain this growth though, we have to continually challenge ourselves to improve the products and services we offer to our visitors. The sheets, towels, smiles and experiences have to be fresh for each visitor! “

Mark McCarthy, Chair of Destination St. John’s said, “Weather wise our summer was a good news bad news summer. Yet this did not deter our visitors from coming and enjoying themselves. As we know people don’t come here to get a sun tan! They come here to participate in our exotic culture, cuisine and hospitality, enjoy our coastal hiking, and see our icebergs, whales and birds .”

Conference Delegates Love St. John's Area...
May 3rd , 2010

Delegates to conferences held in St. John’s during 2009 were surveyed about their visit and overwhelmingly reported having a great time and think this place is “the best place on earth”.

Delegates stayed on average 6 nights and half of those surveyed indicated they visited areas outside the City of St. John’s during their stay. 40% of the delegates reported that they extended their stay in the province beyond the conference dates. Of that group 27% extended their stay by 3 – 4 nights and 16% extended their stay by 5 or more nights.

These delegates dropped large dollars while they were here too. On average they spent $1,646 – excluding airfare. Delegates who visited areas outside the city spent $332 more than the average spend for all delegates.

“These results provide confirmation that our plan to attract large groups to St. John’s and encourage them to come early or stay later and visit more of the province is working like a charm”, said Mark McCarthy Chair of Destination St. John’s.

85% of delegates gave the city and province a rating of 8 out of 10 or higher as a desirable conference destination. Further, 83% of the delegates said they would be likely or very likely to return for future business and pleasure. Fully half of all delegates reported visiting areas outside the City during their stay.

Keith Healey CEO of Destination St. John’s said,” there were many highlights in the survey for our destination but the best parts of the survey for me were the comments made by the delegates. One delegate said “I believe my retirement plans will include living in this province. Other than to see my family I don’t want to leave”. Another delegate said “I was broken hearted to have to leave”. These comments represent a strong endorsement of who we are and the experiences we provide to our visitors”.

Accomodations Sector Bucks National Trend in 2009
While many destinations in Canada are reporting significant losses in room night sales, St. John’s accommodators are reporting a 2.2% increase in sales over 2008.

“Eastern Newfoundland continues to be a magnet for all manner of visitors; reflecting the strength of our people, our culture and the natural beauty of our province” says Destination St. John’s CEO, Keith Healey. In 2009 the destination recorded another record year of room night sales; selling a total of 570,190 room nights. This is up from 2008 by almost 12,000 room nights. Average occupancy for the year was 66.58% up from 66.02% in 2008; while the average rate for a room climbed by $2.50 to $123.55.

These numbers reflect all accommodations, but are compiled based on statistics submitted monthly to Destination St. John’s by the thirteen major hotels in the City, which represent 84% of the total commercial rooms.

Mark McCarthy, Chair of the Board of Destination St. John’s says, “2009 was a difficult year for tourism in many parts of Canada and indeed the world. It is clear that our destination fared much better than many other locations and this is reflective of both the strength of our economy and the strong desire that people have to visit here. We will continue to do our part to ensure that we reach the industry goal of doubling tourism revenue by 2020. ”

Healey says, “With success comes the challenge of closer scrutiny from competitors. Our ability to continuously put up record numbers has drawn attention from other destinations looking to get in on the action and this means we will have to work harder to maintain our favoured position with the business and leisure traveller. We look forward to working with all our partners and our members to ensure that 2010 and beyond are strong years for our destination.”

Destination St. John’s sells and markets Eastern Newfoundland to the travel trade and tourism sectors throughout North America. Its vision is of ‘A vibrant economy in Eastern Newfoundland, driven by a strong sustainable travel trade and tourism business and through productive partnerships’.

QUALITY HOTEL HARBOURVIEW RECEIVES PRESTIGOUS CANADIAN HOTEL OF THE YEAR AWARD FROM CHOICE HOTELS CANADA

ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND (May 21, 2009) –St. John’s Quality Hotel Harbourview has been awarded the 2009 Canadian Hotel of the Year by Choice Hotels Canada. The award was announced during the Choice Hotels International 55th annual conference held in Washington D.C earlier this month.

“We are thrilled to accept this award,” says Kurt Schoenberg, General Manager. “Guest Satisfaction is the ultimate goal, and our dedicated team of employees strive to deliver exceptional customer service, in the unique style found only in Newfoundland and Labrador – for them to be nationally recognized for their efforts is a huge compliment.”

Of the 280-plus Choice hotels in Canada, only 3 hotels from the distinguished 22 Gold Award winning properties were nominated for the 2009 Canadian Hotel of the Year award. Finalists were nominated and evaluated by peer hoteliers, who considered a number of factors, including guest service, hotel cleanliness and décor. The Choice Canada Franchise Advisory Board (CCFAB) selected a winner from the finalists and announced its decision on May 12, 2009, at the worldwide convention in Washington, DC. This is not the first time St. John’s Quality Hotel Harbourview has been recognized for its hard work. Prior to this announcement, the Quality hotel was recently honoured with the 2008 Gold Hospitality award from Choice Hotels Canada, and was also a finalist for the 2007 Canadian Hotel of the Year.

Located at 2 Hill O'Chips, and owned by InnVest REIT and operated by General Manager Kurt Schoenberg, the St. John’s Quality Hotel Harborview features 160 rooms that are tastefully appointed and feature all of the comforts of home –wireless high-speed Internet access, sheltered parking, daily newspaper and local calls, all offered on a complimentary basis. Guests can take advantage of the hotel’s business services, oversized in-room workstations and meeting room facilities. Additionally, Rumpelstiltskin’s restaurant is a popular eatery for both local and out of town guests alike.

“Comfortable rooms, local charm and warm hospitality welcome travellers at this beautiful hotel,” says Tim Oldfield, Managing Director of Franchise Performance, Choice Hotels Canada. “This prestigious award is a testament of the Quality Hotel Harbourview’s commitment to providing excellent customer service. CANADIAN HOTEL OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS

COMFORT INN AIRPORT NOMINATED FOR CANADIAN HOTEL OF THE YEAR AWARD

“To be nominated is a big boost for our team,” says general manager, Andrew Windsor. “It’s a reflection of the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm our staff members bring to work day in, day out. Its proof we have one of the best teams in the business.”

There are over 280 Choice hotels in Canada, and only three hotels out of a possible 22 gold award winning hotels were nominated for the 2009 Canadian Hotel of the Year award. Finalists were nominated and evaluated by peer hoteliers, who considered a number of factors, including guest service, hotel cleanliness and décor.

The Choice Canada Franchise Advisory Board (CCFAB) will select a winner from the finalists and will announce its decision on May 12, 2009, in conjunction with Choice Hotels International’s worldwide convention set for May 11-13 in Washington, DC. The Comfort Inn Airport will also compete as a finalist for the prestigious International Hotel of the Year award, presented to the outstanding hotel from the worldwide Choice family.

Owned by the Sparkes Family of Clayton Hospitality Inc. and operated by general manager Andrew Windsor, the hotel boasts meeting space that can accommodate up to 350 people, and facilities are in place to answer the needs of business travelers. Complimentary airport transportation is provided, as well as the usual value-packed Comfort amenities like free wireless Internet, local calls and daily newspaper. Because many guests have to rise early for morning flights, the free Comfort Sunshine breakfast begins at 4:00 a.m.
“The Comfort Inn Airport has been a gold award winner twice in just four years as part of the Choice family,” says Tim Oldfield, managing director of franchise performance, Choice Hotels Canada. “Newfoundland is famous for its hospitality, and the genuine warmth of welcome is just one of the attributes that sets the Comfort Inn Airport in St. John’s apart.”

Reservations at the Comfort Inn Airport can be made by calling 800.4CHOICE or by visiting choicehotels.ca.

Celebrating Bartlett 2009

Selected by Frommers as one of the Top 10 Anniversary events in the world for 2009.

Captain Bob Bartlett is considered to be the greatest ice captain of the 20th century. From his success with the famed 1909 Peary Polar expedition to his countless Far North adventures and voyages, Bartlett is one of the true heroes of the 20th century. Celebrating Bartlett 2009 is a program to bring Bartlett’s story to new generations.

Born in Brigus, Newfoundland in 1875, ‘Captain Bob’ earned his place in history when he brought Admiral Robert Peary to the top of the world in the renowned North Pole trek of 1909. Following this expedition Bartlett continued to explore the Arctic and his voyages were legendary. On the 1913-14 Karluk expedition he trekked 700 miles across the Arctic in 37 days to rescue the survivors of this doomed journey. He dedicated the last 20 years of his life to scientific research and his contribution to our understanding of the Arctic is still recognized by many North American institutions. Bartlett is our greatest mariner and one of our greatest historical figures.

In 2009 one of the last of the Arctic expeditionary schooners, the Bowdoin, will visit 12 ports around Newfoundland and Labrador bringing a program of boarding and sailing, exhibition, drama, entertainment and community activities. The Bowdoin’s provincial tour will provide the public with opportunities to step aboard an historic schooner that has the distinction of being the only schooner from Bartlett’s era to have been purpose-built for Arctic expeditions. Musicians Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne will travel to all ports to perform their great repertoire of maritime songs and music. A new travelling exhibit will tell Bartlett’s story in each of the host port communities and the tour will also feature a variety of drama productions. In addition, each of the ports will organize their own schedule of community activities and heritage projects.

The province-wide 2009 celebrations will also include exhibits in cultural and educational institutions, educational projects in all schools in the province, and a special historical symposium on the subject of Bartlett and Arctic exploration. One of the most interesting projects is a unique Arctic voyage simulation at the Marine Institute’s Centre for Marine Simulation, a world leader in marine simulation. There will be a number of ceremonial activities in 2009, including a Canada Post stamp honouring Bartlett and special commemorative geographic naming.

And all Celebrating Bartlett 2009 events and activities are free of charge.

Tourism Marketing Efforts Earn International Acclaim

Newfoundland and Labrador’s tourism marketing excellence has been recognized once again – this time internationally – with three awards announced at the recent Adrian Awards, sponsored by Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI). The award winners were announced earlier this week at a gala event in New York City.

The province earned gold in the Positioning category for the overall Fresh Air Campaign; silver in the Web Marketing category for the online hunting and fishing campaign, and bronze in the Signage-Outdoor/Transit category for the window superboard – an element of the Fresh Air Campaign – which featured a hand-painted three-dimensional "view out the window" with actual curtains blowing from what appeared to be a Newfoundland and Labrador sea breeze. The superboard was placed over the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto this past summer.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said this latest acknowledgement from HSMAI builds on the various awards and accolades Newfoundland and Labrador’s tourism marketing campaign has received over the last several years.

"This kind of recognition enhances our growing reputation as leaders and innovators in tourism marketing, but most importantly, it draws attention to this province as a destination of choice," said Minister Jackman. "The Fresh Air Campaign, as well as the recent launch of our new tourism television advertisements, have sparked incredibly positive reaction across the country, and can only help achieve our goal of further growing our industry."

The multi-media Fresh Air Campaign included television, radio and print advertising, superboards in Toronto and Ottawa, and the unique Get Carried Away taxi promotion in downtown Toronto last summer. The Provincial Government worked with Target Marketing and Communications Inc. to produce the marketing campaign.

The Adrian Awards are presented by HSMAI, an international organization of sales and marketing professionals representing all divisions of hospitality, travel, and tourism, and honour creative talent and best practices in hospitality, travel and tourism marketing. The Adrian Awards are recognized as the world’s most esteemed advertising, public relations and web marketing competition specifically designed for the travel industry.

Over the past five years, the Provincial Government has doubled its tourism marketing budget from $6 million to $12 million.

2008 Record Year
January 15, 2009
St. John’s, NL

2008 yet another record year for rooms sold – Destination St. John’s reports

“Eastern Newfoundland continues to be a destination of choice and an exotic location for travellers” says Destination St. John’s CEO, Keith Healey. In 2008 the destination recorded yet another record year of room night sales; selling a total of 558,210 room nights. This is up from 2007 by almost 18,000 room nights for a 3.3% increase. Average occupancy for the year was 66.02% up from 64.57% in 2007, while the average rate for a room climbed by $3.45 to $121.05

These numbers reflect all accommodations, but are compiled based on statistics submitted monthly to Destination St. John’s by the thirteen major hotels in the City, which represent 87% of the total commercial rooms in the City.

Mark McCarthy, Chair of the Board of Destination St. John’s says, “In a year in which many other locations in the country experienced small declines in overall visitations, Eastern Newfoundland again shows good growth. It is clear the hard work of our members, staff and partners and the vision and leadership provided by our Board continues to pay dividends for the destination.”

Healey says, “Looking forward to 2009 Eastern Newfoundland is poised to have another record year. However, I caution that while current bookings look very good we are not in a position to know what impact the continuing world economic downturn will have on the travel industry and especially on the convention and meeting business. It is incumbent on the sales staff of Destination St. John’s and members and partners to increase our sales and marketing efforts even more so during these uncertain economic times.”

Destination St. John’s sells and markets Eastern Newfoundland to the travel trade and tourism sectors throughout North America. Its vision is of ‘A vibrant economy in Eastern Newfoundland, driven by a strong sustainable travel trade and tourism business and through productive partnerships’.
